Norfolk Southern lives diversity

Norfolk Southern’s strength as a company comes from our people. Our vision to be the safest, most customer-focused, and successful transportation company in the world is carried out by talented and dedicated team members who share a diversity of experiences, backgrounds, and skills.

An equal opportunity employer

Norfolk Southern offers employment without discrimination based on race, religion, color, national origin, gender, age, status as a covered veteran, sexual orientation, gender identity, the presence of a disability, genetic information, or any other legally protected status.

Our company supports and complies with all applicable laws, regulations, and executive orders to provide equal opportunity and nondiscrimination in the hiring, training, remuneration, advancement, and all other privileges gained based on qualifications and performance to company employees.

Promoting diversity through affirmative action

Norfolk Southern supports equal treatment and opportunity for all employees and job applicants and makes every effort to promote diversity through affirmative action and other efforts that support equal employment opportunities.

As part of our commitment, we make special efforts to encourage qualified women to seek employment in nontraditional jobs and to encourage minorities, veterans, and individuals with disabilities to apply for positions at all levels. We advance our diversity goals by coordinating our efforts with government agencies, state employment offices, and colleges and universities with large female and minority enrollments.

EEO and You

Taking responsibility

As a Norfolk Southern employee, you have an impact on the company’s EEO efforts and share in the responsibility to ensure compliance with fair and equal treatment of all employees. You reflect that commitment in your everyday interactions with colleagues and customers, helping ensure our place as the employer of choice.

All members of our railroad team benefit from EEO policies. They ensure that you and your co-workers receive pay, benefits, transfers, promotions, furloughs and recall, training, tuition assistance, access to social and recreational programs, and disciplinary action without discrimination based on your diverse characteristics.

Impact on training and promotions

NS encourages and monitors the participation of minorities, women, veterans, and individuals with disabilities in company-sponsored training opportunities, including company orientation and advanced management training. Training activities and in-house workshops help employees gain skills for advancement as well as sensitivity to human relations and EEO issues.

NS is committed to promoting talent from within the company and bases recommendations for promotion on criteria such as job performance, skill, safety, discipline, and education.

Reasonable Accommodation

NS makes reasonable accommodations to support individuals with disabilities in performing essential job functions and to support employees’ desire to participate in religious observations.

Pay Transparency Policy Statement

Norfolk Southern will not discharge or in any manner discriminate against employees or applicants because they have inquired about, discussed, or disclosed their own pay or the pay of another employee or applicant. However, employees who have access to the compensation information of other employees or applicants as a part of their essential job functions cannot disclose the pay of other employees or applicants to individuals who do not otherwise have access to compensation information, with these exceptions – if the disclosure is in response to a formal complaint or charge; in furtherance of an investigation, proceeding, hearing, or action, including an investigation conducted by the employer; or consistent with the contractor’s legal duty to furnish information.

Reporting EEO Policy Violations

Any employee who feels that he or she has witnessed or been subject to conduct that violates our EEO policy is required to notify their immediate nonagreement supervisor or the company’s EEO office. It is not sufficient to report concerns to any other individual, including supervisors to whom you do not immediately report, supervisory agreement employees, or co-workers.

If your immediate nonagreement supervisor is unavailable or is part of the complaint, you are uncomfortable reporting the complaint to your immediate nonagreement supervisor or are dissatisfied with his or her handling, or you feel that the violation has continued despite your initial report, it is your right and responsibility to report your concerns to our EEO office.

Reports to the company’s EEO office must be made using the toll-free number 1-888-TALKEEO (825-5336) or by email at

Our commitment to you

Employees and job applicants will never be subject to harassment, intimidation, threats, coercion, or discrimination because they have filed a complaint, opposed an unlawful practice, participated in an investigation or compliance review, or assisted in a hearing related to federal, state, or local laws.

NS Consolidated EEO Report

Norfolk Southern annually files a mandatory EEO-1 report with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. We make this report publicly available to show our commitment to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion. The EEO-1 report, however, uses specific job categories that are not necessarily tailored to our company’s unique organizational structure.

As such, we encourage you also to review the employment data disclosed in our Environmental, Social and Governance Report, which provides a more specific and informative breakdown of our workforce.
